This is one scene of the movie on which the hero eats lunch.
Yes, he brought obentou from home. I am glad to see Japanese tradition in Taiwan. Nowadays in Japan, there are variety of lunch boxes which are designed cute or functionally. We hardly see obentou box made of aluminum which Jay Chou has.
Under Japan rule, as for the lunch which Taiwanese children brought, it was common to have covered with steamed rice downward and to have carried upwards smoked dry eggs and pig tails well with soy sauce . In those days in Taiwan, there were two type of elementary schools. One was Ko-gakkou for Taiwanese children. Ko-gakkou was where to learn Japanese and to be educated as Japanese. Because Taiwan aborigine spoke different language. Another was ordinary elementary school where Japanese kids and a few Taiwanese kids go to. Those Taiwanese kids who were able to go to elementary school were from good pedigree and Kokugokatei (Japanese as a first language). Elite Taiwan kids and Japanese kids went to same school anyhow. Since school didn't provide lunch yet, every kid had to bring obentou for lunch. I heard that there were some children who stand the lid of lunch box and ate trying not to be seen inside. They were ashamed of eating pig tails and hated being teased by classmate....One boy asked his mother for Japanese style obentou containing egg omelet, baked salmon, pickles, nori, dried bonito etc. His mother went to Japanese food market, learned really hard how to make Japanese style obentou. He reminisced and thanked to mother.
I don't know exactly the contents of obentou of students nowadays. Maybe Paigu( Pork cutlet), Taiwanese sausage, fried chiken, stir fry vegetable .... just my guessing from obentou selling at convenience store. I just want to say to young generation in Taiwan that obentou culture was brought by Japan. Lunch box selling at railroad station, school obentou were brought by Japanese. I want the next generation for my ardent wish to inherit nutritious mom's obentou with love, reuseable obentou box not disposable.
